Josephine Chez Dumonet
Josephine Chez Dumonet Review
Theater types, politicos, and locals fill the moleskin banquettes of this venerable bistro, where the frosted-glass lamps and amber walls put everyone in a good light. Unlike most bistros, Josephine caters to the indecisive, since generous half portions allow you to graze your way through the temptingly retro menu. Try the excellent boeuf bourguignon, roasted saddle of lamb with artichokes, top-notch steak tartare prepared table-side, or anything with truffles in season; game is also a specialty in fall and winter. For dessert, choose between a mille-feuille big enough to serve three and a Grand Marnier soufflé that simply refuses to sink, even with prodding. The wine list, like the food, is outstanding if expensive.

What a breath of fresh air...We are a merry bunch of travelers that enjoy a good meal and pleasant conservation. A lack of pretense is to be appreciated at every turn in life....When reading the below criticism of the Vancouver folks who so "suffered from the despair of the wine list being out of date", we all would like to inquire of you, " Do you seriously think this is a measure of whether or not the restauranteurs have bared their knuckles and stretched their energy reserves to create a magnificent gastronomical experience??? Are you caught up in the whole wine thing....??? So much that you missed the whole COOKING point... Well, for the rest of the people that choose to read this .... Get there, Get there quickly because the energy of the diners and of the staff will make you remember what it is to served and you will regard the simple elegance as being something of a dying past....

i disagree with the review above. Chez Dumonet is last french bistrot.food is home made, atmosphere fantastic, wine is great but expensive.it isn't a place for grab&go or if you are in hurry. you just need to enjoy your evening.

Completely disagree with the previous review unless something has changed since our last visit. Outstanding food in a very traditional French bistro setting.

Staff pleasant but feckless. A 2003 wine was replaced with a 2006 one. My husband pointed this out to the waiter. It happened twice! Wine list has many wines listed but many with no pricing meaning they were not even available. Then when one orders wines that do have prices one finds no stock! Could they be trying to make things look good by padding their wine list? Food was dreadful. Both our salads had lettuce that was brown on the edges and the greens were droopy - yesterdays? Restaurant is dirty and unkempt. And I don't mean just smoky dirty. Could not recommend this restaurant. The unsuspecting tourists are being ripped off. Very surprised to discover that this is one of Fodor's choices when there are so many other great restaurants in Paris - charming and reasonably priced.
