This redbrick viaduct once brought trains to the edge of the canal at Bastille; now it's brought a swath of greenery and a jolt of energy to this neighborhood. The elevated tracks have been transformed into a stylish promenade with upscale boutiques and artisans' workshops sheltered in its arches. The only hardship is deciding whether to stay up on the garden path or to browse shops down at street level. (Stairways regularly connect the two levels.) You can detour down rue de Lyon, which will lead you to the Gare de Lyon; inside, walk up the grand staircase to gape at Le Train Bleu, a hallucinatory Belle Epoque restaurant and bar that was once Salvador Dalí's favorite Paris hangout.
