Hôtel des Monnaies

Fodor's Review:

Louis XVI transferred the royal mint to this imposing mansion in the late 18th century; then it was moved to Pessac, near Bordeaux, in 1973. Weights and measures, medals, and limited-edition coins are still made here, though, and the Musée de la Monnaie has an extensive collection of coins, documents, engravings, and paintings. If those offerings don't thrill, you can watch the coin-metal craftspeople at work in their ateliers overlooking the Seine, each Wednesday and Friday at 2:15 PM; advance reservations are necessary (you can e-mail musee@monnaiedeparis.fr).

  • Cost: EUR 5, EUR 3 for atelier visit by reservation only
  • Open: Tues.-Fri. 11-5:30, weekends noon-5:30
  • Metro: Pont Neuf, Odéon
