Bercy

Neighborhoods / Streets, Bercy/Tolbiac

Fodor's Review:

Bercy is a testament to the French genius for urban renewal. Tucked away south of the Gare de Lyon in the 12 arrondissement, stone buildings that were once used to store wine from the provinces have become the shops and restaurants of Bercy Village, also known as Cour St-Emilion. Close by is a quirky Cubist building designed by Frank Gehry, who described it as "a dancing figure in the park." It houses the new and improved Cinémathèque Française a film-buff's paradise, with theaters as well as a cinema museum. To your right is a contemporary garden named for Nobel peace prizewinner Yitzhak Rabin.

Immediately across from Bercy is the fabulous new floating aquatic center, Piscine Josephine Baker (Port de la Gare, Bibliothèque. 01-56-61-96-50. Quai de la Gare. www.paris.fr/portail/sport), named after the American dancer who sang so convincingly of her two loves -- her country and Paris! The pool offers inexpensive swimming lessons, a glamorous deck for sunbathers, and a stellar view -- all for EUR 5.
