Madame de Pompadour, Napoléon, Joséphine, the Duke of Wellington, and Queen Victoria all stayed at this palace, today the home of the French president. Originally built as a private mansion in 1718, it has housed presidents only since 1873. Unfortunately, you can only visit the building and its gardens during Patrimony Days, the third weekend in September; at all other times it's closed to the public.
