Fodor's Review:

Prime-time stardom as Carrie Bradshaw's Parisian pied-à-terre in the final episodes of Sex & the City boosted the street cred of this 1911 palace hotel. But its revival as the city's lap of luxury owes more to the meticulous attention of the renowned chef Alain Ducasse, who oversees everything from the hotel's flagship restaurant and restored 1930s Relais Plaza brasserie to the quality of the breakfast croissants. Rooms have been redone in either Regency, Louis XVI, or deco style, with remote control air-conditioning, mini hi-fi/CD players, and even a pillow menu. The trendy bar has as its centerpiece an impressive Bombay glass comptoir glowing like an iceberg.

Outstanding

I don't know why John and Michael had problems as we again found the hotel staff to be most accommodating(stayed at hotel July 2005). We booked directly with the hotel via email. Our stay was for two nights at the beginning of our trip and three nights at the end of our trip (we were in Amsterdam for two days). Both times we were upgraded to a suite without asking (my only request was that the room face the courtyard). Concierge staff could not have been more helpful or polite. Only complaint is that the hotel charges for internet service.

What is French for "I squash you like a bug"?

I agree with John - we also had an "upgrade" thru Amex that was not quite what we expected. We were insulted and condescended to in a hundred small ways including being asked to wait upon check in "for ten minutes" then forgotten about completely. Overpriced, irritating - would be a deal for the Ramada Inn but not what you'd expect for a grand a night. Beautifully appointed but the internet worked fitfully and the steam room not at all. Drop-dead gorgeous courtyard including melodious birds to awaken you in the morning (just before room service ignores your "do not disturb" notice and walks in.) I suspect if we were famous we would have been treated much differently. A great place - for Carrie Bradshaw.

Attitude problems

Booked through AMEX Platinum and the hotel didn't want to give me the upgrade. First they told me that the room they gave me was the upgraded room until I informed them that wasn't the case. Then they told me there weren't any upgraded rooms available, but I knew (through Amex) there were. Lying like this is unacceptable and the hotel manager, although apologetic, didn't do anything to rectify the situation. Paying these prices for lies and deception is outrageous. I would never stay there again. Four Seasons is nicer anyway.
