Chez Marianne. You'll know you've found Marianne's when you see the line of people reading the bits of wisdom and poetry painted across her windows. The restaurant-deli, with a second cloistered room in the back, serves excellent Middle Eastern and Jewish specialties such as hummus, fried eggplant, and soul-warming chopped liver, which you can match with one of the affordable wines. The sampler platter lets you try four, five, or six items -- even the smallest plate makes a filling feast. Falafel sandwiches are served in the restaurant only on weekdays at lunch, though you can get them anytime at the takeout window.
