Topped by an impressive mansard roof, set in an elegant 18th-century château mansion, and surrounded by adorable gardens, this is a true oasis of peace a few kilometers down the road—and yet a million miles away—from the nearby World War II sites like Omaha Beach. Found inland from Port-en-Bessin, the hotel allures with super-stylish guest rooms, which comprise a fetching mix of Louis Seize chairs, gilded ormolu objects, modern photographs, and very chic fabrics. Overlooking the grand pool is La Chenevière's showpiece: a stunning, glassed-in modern conservatory set with wicker furniture and abstract art. The restaurant (closed Monday, no lunch Tuesday) serves cuisine appropriate to its surroundings: Dover sole with artichokes, lobster with wild-mushroom risotto, or roast veal with truffles. Pros: magnificent architecture; luxurious rooms. Cons: three different buildings; no a/c in the château.

There are very few top notch accomodations in the la Manche region of Normandy. Just outside the little seaside village of Port-en-Bessin is la Cheneviere. This hotel is pricey, but the rooms are worth the price in my view. We did not dine there, but enjoyed the delicious and varied buffet breakfasts.
Air conditioning is one of our requirements and la Cheneviere is one of a small handful of places in Normandy which provides it.
There is a great pool and the grounds and lawns are expansive and flower-filled. Some of the specimen trees are magnificent. There are trails meandering through woods, fields and orchards. We had a very satisfying stay.
