The narrow slits serving as windows on the tower recall the origins of the 17th-century Manoir du Carel, set nicely halfway between Bayeux and the sea, and built as a fortified manor during the Hundred Years' War. Owner Jacques Aumond enjoys welcoming guests to his comfortable rooms with modern furnishings. The cottage on the grounds, ideal for families, has a kitchen plus a fireplace that masks a brick oven where villagers once had their bread baked. Pets are not allowed. Pros: delightful old building; English-speaking owners, wonderful breakfasts. Cons: no pets.
