In the heart of Chamonix, this small and ancient inn, founded in 1793, has modest and tidy rooms, each with a good-size bathroom—from one you can even lie in the tub and look out the window at Mont Blanc. Make sure you ask for one of the newly renovated rooms. The hotel has no restaurant, but right next door is the Brasserie de L'M, where reasonably priced Savoie specialties are served. The hotel shuttle bus can take you to the slopes. Pros: top value for Chamonix; excellent central location; historic vibe. Cons: faulty plumbing produces dampness in older rooms; important variation between renovated and unrenovated rooms.
