The second-oldest café in France, junior only to the Procope in Paris, this was a favorite haunt of Henri Beyle (aka Stendhal) as well as the spot where Choderlos de Laclos sought inspiration for (or perhaps a rest from) his 1784 Liaisons Dangereuses. Traditionally known for gatherings of les mordus (literally the "bitten, " or passionate ones), the café still hosts poetry readings and concerts and serves dinner until nearly midnight.
