Dining under the watchful eye of the delightful Danièle Chavant is a pleasure at this ivy-covered mansion—note that the dining room is closed Saturday lunch, Sunday dinner, and Monday—in Bresson, a 15-minute drive south of town (out Avenue J. Perrot to Avenue J. Jaurès, which becomes Route D269). The lobster smothered in black truffles is wonderfully wicked and wholly delicious, while the civet de biche en robe d'automne (venison with apples, potatoes, and turnips in a daube sauce) is unforgettable. Rooms are elegant and spacious, overlooking meadows and forests beyond the lush garden and pool. Pros: lovely village with pretty views and walks; excellent classic cuisine and outstanding wine cellar; tastefully appointed rooms and lush garden. Cons: not handy to the cultural attractions of Grenoble's old town; tricky driving directions from Grenoble.
