Palais de l'Isle

Fodor's Review:

Meander through the Vieille Ville, starting on the small island in the River Thiou, at the 12th-century Palais de l'Isle (Island Palace), once site of courts of law and a prison, now a landmark. Like a stone ship, the small islet perches in midstream, surrounded by cobblestone quais and it remains one of France's most picturesque (and photographed) sites. It houses the Musée d'Histoire d'Annecy and is where tours of the old prisons and cultural exhibitions begin. 04-50-33-87-30. EUR 3.50. June-Sept., daily 10-6; Oct.-May, Wed.-Mon. 10-noon and 2-6.
