Osier (wicker) products have been made for centuries in Villaines-les-Rochers, 6 km (4 mi) southeast of Azay-le-Rideau via D57. Willow reeds are cultivated in nearby fields and dried in the sun each May, before being transformed into sofas, cat baskets, or babies' rattles. In 1849, when the craft was threatened with extinction, the parish priest persuaded 65 small groups of basket weavers to form France's first agricultural workers' cooperative. The Vannerie de Villaines, which is open daily, is still going strong and offers a wide choice of wicker goods for sale.
