This 17th-century stone-and-brick château close to the expressway outside Vernon has high-pitched roofs, an imposing forecourt, and extensive grounds. Guest rooms follow the same exuberant turn-of-the-19th-century lines; the largest is room No. 32 (a suite). Even if you're not staying here, you can dine on the inventive food in the august restaurant, Le Grand Siècle. A sumptuous EUR 45 four-course menu and dishes such as lobster mousse and veal with truffles make it a popular spot—and it's relatively easy to get to from Giverny, a few miles across the Seine from Vernon. As such châteaux-hotels go, a stay here is a relatively good value. Pros: magnificent architecture; excellent restaurant. Cons: isolated location (car needed); often swamped by business meetings midweek.
