Set on Chartres's main town square not far from the cathedral, this is a delightful option with decor that remains seductively and warmly redolent of the 19th century. Built originally as a coaching inn (and today part of the Best Western chain), the hotel has numerous rooms, many attractively outfitted with brick walls, wood antiques, lush drapes, and modern bathrooms; the best are in a separate turn-of-the-20th-century building overlooking a garden, while the most atmospheric are tucked away in the attic. Downstairs, the stylishly decorated Georges restaurant serves such delicacies as pheasant pie and scallops with lentils and has prix-fixe menus starting at EUR 29.50. It's closed Monday and there's no dinner Sunday, but the hotel's Madrigal brasserie is open daily. Pros: old-fashioned charm; good restaurant. Cons: best rooms are in an annex; stiff uphill walk to cathedral.
