One of the world's most famous small museums of modern art is a big reason why many people come to St-Paul. Located a kilometer (½ mi) outside the village, Fondation Maeght is a temple of 20th-century art founded in 1964 by celebrated art dealer Aimé Maeght. Set on a wooded cliff top high above the medieval town, the museum is an extraordinary marriage of the arc-and-plane architecture of José Maria Sert; the looming sculptures of Miró and Moore; and its humbling setting of pines, vines, and flowing planes of water. On display is an intriguing and ever-varying collection of the work of modern masters, including the wise and funny late-life masterwork La Vie (Life) by Chagall. Giacometti's figures stride the courtyards, Miró's Egg emerges from the pool, while mobiles by Calder and Arp shift in the breeze. Inside, the multilevel, light-filled museum displays an ever-changing feast of works by Braque, Léger, Dubuffet, and other masters of 20th-century art. In addition, there are temporary exhibitions, artists' studios, a library, cinema, and auditorium (where concerts are held). You can get to the museum using the Nice-Vence bus.
