In a residential street behind the port lurks one of Nice's most talked about restaurants, with a Finnish chef at the helm. Jouni Tormanen worked with the likes of Alain Ducasse and Ferran Adria before opening this shrine to the finest local ingredients. Here he serves a EUR 30 lunch menu and dinner menus at EUR 50 and EUR 70 in the simply decorated dining room and on the sidewalk terrace. The restaurant seats 20, with room for a few more outside. Host Giuseppe Serena will explain to you why the restaurant doesn't serve shrimp on windy days (conditions are wrong for fishing) and talk you through the selection of olive oils on the shelves. Though the cooking is very near flawless, those with hearty appetites might find the portions small and the prices a bit high.

Jouni now at La Reserve (Atelier) was highly recommended by friends who knew the Chef's reputation based on his earlier Jouni (on rue Lascaris). Food and romantic setting lived up to expectations but the service on a recent August 2007 evening was so amateurish that the overall experience was actually a poor one. At first, we were rushed, cocktails removed without being finished, pressed to order, first and second courses properly served, then desserts and wine service totally forgotten. My wife's souffle (which was ordered at the outset) arrived cold after an inexplicable 45 minute delay. When we told our waiter, he essentially said "tant pis" (too bad) Fortunately, I had a cheese plate. I never got my espresso. To add insult to injury, the cab we requested and were told was ordered was not called until we actually left, leaving another 30 minute wait outside of the restaurant. No effort was made to apologize for any of the above.
