This 12th-century Cistercian abbey, an extraordinary example of Romanesque architecture, stands in an austere, isolated valley. The purity of the structure (or severity, if you will) was a reaction in its day to the luxurious extravagance of the abbey Cluny in Burgundy. Study the dense stonework and almost total absence of wooden support, and admire the near-perfect symmetry of the church's ground plan and its gentle forays into Gothic style. The cloister is stark and stolid compared to the delicate cloisters of Fréjus and Arles.
