When to Go

Of course, the optimal time to visit vineyards is around the fall harvest, when the weather is usually at its best. Summer also has its advantages. Compared to many other regions of France, Champagne remains relatively uncrowded in July and August; and the coolness of the chalk cellars makes it a pleasure to tour the Champagne houses then (note that many close after the busy winter holidays for the first few months of the year, as do some of the smaller hotels and restaurants). Spring is generally unpredictable weather-wise, but on the dry and sunny days it can be idyllic. Whatever you plan to do, be sure to come between May and October; the ubiquitous vineyards are a dismal, leafless sight the rest of the year.
