Considered by some an obligatory stop on their tour of Burgundy's vineyards, this château, 3 km (2 mi) from Vougeot, has almost become too popular for its own good (an on-site conference center doesn't help things). Formerly an abbey and a government-run avant-garde theater, the château does show some glorious vestiges worthy of its Relais & Châteaux parentage: painted ceilings, a gigantic vaulted crypt-cellar (now the dining room), suits of armor. Guest rooms have magnificent beamed ceilings and lovely views, though the least expensive have standard-issue fabrics, reproduction furniture, and ordinary bathrooms. The restaurant's menu includes pastries made with Cîteaux's famous handmade cheese. An "elegant form of dress" is requested for dinner. Pros: beautiful location; friendly staff. Cons: pricey; heavily touristed.

I love the Chateau de Gilly. It has been my splurge when I go to France. I usually stay here near the end of my vacation and take a train back to Paris. The dining is superb and the dining room is amazing. The gothic architecture is worth seeing. The meals are absolutely delicious. I always make sure I have dinner there. It is worth it. However, the rooms with dinner are quite expensive.
