Vannes

Scene of the declaration of unity between France and Brittany in 1532, Vannes is one of the few towns in the region to have been spared damage during World War II. That makes its Vielle Ville (Old Town), where many of the prettiest sights are concentrated, particularly appealing. The ramparts crumble evocatively under ivy blankets, and each gateway has a character all its own. Visit the 16th-century cathedral; browse the antiques shops in the pedestrian streets around pretty Place Henri-IV; and then take a boat trip around the scenic Golfe du Morbihan.
