This château, 18 km (11 mi) east of Combourg and dating from 1620, has sophisticated gardens that feature modern sculpture, leafy groves, columns of yew, a fernery, a labyrinth, and a Temple of Diana. To visit the interior, with its gleaming wood paneling and huge granite staircase, you'll have to stay the night—in one of the five large, beautifully decorated, fabric-swathed guest rooms (each with a four-poster bed), and dine with the dynamic English-speaking owners Alain Schrotter and Marie-France Barrère. Reserve well in advance and be sure to specify whether you'll be staying for dinner. Nineteenth-century writers Alfred de Musset, Honoré de Balzac, and Victor Hugo all preceded you as guests.
