The Médoc wine region, which accounts for eight of the most famous appellations of the wine country that surrounds Bordeaux, is north and northwest of Bordeaux, along the Gironde estuary. However, the medieval region of St-Émilion, 35 km (36 mi) to the east of the city, has vineyards that are family owned and relatively small, with on average 7 hectares to each property—they're divided into two appellations, St-Émilion and St-Émilion Grand Cru.
