Bordeaux is one of France's main transportation hubs. However, once you get out into the surrounding Gironde—the "Wine Country"—you can find its seven regions (divided according to geography and the types of wine produced) difficult to reach without a car. Public buses run frequently through the countryside, but stops often appear in the middle of nowhere and schedules are irregular. Get very specific information from Bordeaux's main tourist office and from the bus ticket window on the Esplanade des Quinconces, before boarding a bus. If you have access to a car, you'll find life much easier, particularly if you purchase a Michelin map; Map No. 234 covers a large portion of the southwest. Another option is to go on a bus tour organized by the Bordeaux tourist office.
