Overview in Helsinki

Helsinki center is compact and best explored on foot. The City Tourist Office provides a free Helsinki route map detailing all public transportation. The Helsinki Kortti (Helsinki Card) allows unlimited travel on city public transportation, free entry to many museums, a free sightseeing tour, and other discounts. It's available for one, two, or three days (EUR 25, EUR 35, or EUR 45, respectively). You can buy it at more than 70 places, including the airport (information desks), ferry terminals, some hotels and travel agencies, Stockmann's department store, the Hotel Booking Centre, the Helsinki City Tourist office, or online through Helsinki Expert; contact them for more information.

The bus and tram networks are compact but extensive, and service is frequent, with more infrequent service nights and on Sunday. Be sure to pick up a route map at the tourist office—many stops do not have them. Tickets bought from the driver cost EUR 2 for buses and EUR 1.80 for trams. You can also buy a tourist ticket for unlimited travel on public transportation within the city (EUR 5.40 one day, EUR 10.80 three days, EUR 16.20 five days), or purchase the Travel Card, loaded with an amount or for a time period. Extensive information on routes, fares, and timetables is available from the Helsinki City Transport Web site.
