Bellevue

Bellevue Review

The spare lines of Bellevue belie its real age—it's been around since 1917, serving dishes inspired by Russian and Finnish cuisine. Try the shashlik (cubed lamb kebab served with mushroom rice) or the ox fillet à la Novgorod. The plush interior of this elegant town house has many shining samovars, but only some of them are functional; each table has lighted candles.

The Bellevue is a beautiful old restaurant serving authentic Russian food. It is in a nice location in Helsinki, easy to get to, and true to its heritage in design and ambience. I had the pelmeinie and chicken kiev, both classic, traditional Russian dishes. The pelmenie were served in a rich, delicious mushroom sauce. They were filled with perfectly seasoned lamb. The chicken kiev was large, juicy, and just plain delicious. With Russian tea and cookies for dessert it was a perfect meal. Expensive, but perfect.
