Yorkshire: Places to Explore

Thirsk

This busy market town on the western edge of the moors was once a thriving stopover on the main east-west route from the dales to the coast. Today it's a busy, affluent farm town. Lovely Georgian houses abound, and the cobbled medieval Market Place is filled with vendors Saturday and Monday. Thirsk is best known as the place where veterinarian Alf Wight (who wrote about his experiences under the name James Herriot) had his practice.
