Fodor's Review

The natural and archaeological history of the county, including material on the Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and Viking aspects of York, is the focus of this museum on the site of the medieval St. Mary's Abbey. The museum is divided into themed galleries focusing on the different time periods. On display in the early 19th-century Greek Revival–style building with its massive Doric column is the 15th-century Middleham Jewel, a pendant gleaming with a large sapphire, and the extremely rare Copperplate Helmet, a 1,200-year-old Viking artifact discovered during excavations of the city.
