Newby Hall Review

An early-18th-century house redecorated later in the same century by Robert Adam for his patron William Weddell, Newby Hall contains fine decorative art of its period, particularly ornamental plasterwork and Chippendale furniture. The domed Sculpture Hall, devoted to Roman statuary, and the Tapestry Hall, boasting priceless Gobelin tapestries, are gorgeous. The 25 acres of gardens are justifiably famous; a double herbaceous border, which runs down to the river, separates garden "rooms," each flowering during a different season. A miniature railroad, playground, and pedal boats amuse kids. The house is 5 mi southeast of Ripon. Entry to the house is restricted to guided tours, given every hour in April, May, June, and September, and every half hour in July and August.
