Frenchgate Hotel and Restaurant

59–61 Frenchgate, Richmond, DL10 7AE, England

This three-story Georgian town house on a quiet cobbled street has a bright and welcoming interior and a secluded walled garden for summer days. The hotel is full of period features dating back to the 18th century, such as beamed ceilings and wood paneling in the public rooms, but many of the bathrooms are completely up-to-date, with marble floors, ambient lighting, and freestanding Italian baths. The bridal suite features a solid oak four-poster and a hand-carved mantlepiece by local 20th-century craftsman Robert "Mousey" Thompson, complete with one of his trademark decorative mice. Works by area artists fill the hotel, and the elegant bedrooms are tastefully decorated in restful creams and taupes. The popular in-house restaurant serves a fixed-price (£39) Modern British menu. Note: Be careful not to confuse this with Frenchgate Guest House, a B&B on the same street.
