Tanners Review

One of the city's oldest buildings, the 15th-century Prysten House, is the setting for the highly regarded, inventive cuisine of brothers Chris and James Tanner. The à la carte menu (fixed-price also available at lunchtime) includes roast Bodmin Moor venison loin, and seared fillet of brill with buttered leeks, fennel pollen, cockles, chervil, and vermouth. One of the two lattice-windowed dining rooms has a well in it, and the other is hung with tapestries. A canopied courtyard is ideal for alfresco dining. The brothers also operate the Barbican Kitchen, a more casual, less pricey offshoot of the restaurant at the Black Friars Distillery on Southside Street.
