Cliveden Review

If you've ever wondered what it would feel like to be an Edwardian grandee, splurge on a stay at this stately home, one of Britain's grandest hotels. Cliveden's opulent interior includes John Singer Sargent's portrait of Nancy Astor, suits of armor, and a paneled staircase. The plush traditional bedrooms each bear the names of the prime ministers and presidents who have stayed here. Waldo's, one of three restaurants, serves excellent contemporary British and French cuisine. If your pocket doesn't rise to a night here, you can drop in for a luxurious afternoon tea (£30).

The place was very nearly just perfect. The hotel is obviously sublime. And obviously expensive. The room we had was exceptional, with incredible paintings sculpture and fireplace. The grounds are awesome. The staff just fabulous. My one only gripe. The food. Oh dear. Our evening meal in the main dining room was terrible. Just awful. Especially considering the price. The chef was useless. Stay in the hotel. It really is marvellous. But eat out. Or chop your tongue off.
