Lainston House Review

Dating from 1668, this elegant country house in a 63-acre park is discreetly secluded, an obvious attraction for such eminent guests as Margaret Thatcher, who stayed here to write her memoirs. Inside, the main dining room and bar have cedar and oak paneling, and other restored 17th-century details. Bedrooms, many of which are beamed, are done in warm colors and rich fabrics. Ground-floor suites have access to the gardens, and a converted stable holds luxury rooms. Don't miss the resident falconer. The hotel is 2½ mi northwest of Winchester.
