Hedley Hall

Hedley La., near Sunniside, , Northumberland, NE16 5EH, England

So long as you don't mind the short commute from Newcastle (it's 8 miles south of the city), Hedley Hall makes for a peaceful base. The building is the largest of a little complex of old stone dwellings, down a cul-du-sac overlooking a valley, so you really do feel out of the way here, even though the center of Newcastle is only about 20 minutes by car. Inside the atmosphere is all very traditional, although the contemporary guestrooms come with a few welcome mod-cons, such as DVD players and DAB digital radios. Hostess Brenda Fraser is a delight; she's full of information about the area, including places to eat (she's even been known to give hungry guests a lift to nearby pubs and restaurants). There are also a few modern self-catering cottages on the grounds.
