Lake District Sights

Sizergh Castle Review

One of the Lake District's finest fortified houses, Sizergh Castle has a 58-foot-tall defensive peel tower that dates from 1340, when Scottish raids were feared. It has been the home of the Strickland family for more than 760 years. Expanded in Elizabethan times, the castle includes outstanding oak-paneled interiors with intricately carved chimneypieces and oak furniture. The estate has a rock garden with a large collection of ferns, two lakes, an orchard, and an ancient woodland; there are good walks here, too. Sizergh is 3½ miles south of Kendal.
