Drunken Duck Inn Review

After four centuries, this friendly old coaching inn remains an outstanding place for both food and lodging. Bedrooms—bright, chic, contemporary, and exceptionally comfortable—make good use of natural materials, such as local Herdwick wool and slate, and have wonderful views of the Langdale Pikes. Newer rooms have roll-top baths and underfloor heating. The price includes afternoon tea and breakfast. Nestle into the cozy bar with oak settles and order a tasty real ale from the Duck's Barngates Brewery. There's an open fire, and hops hang over the bar. The two dining spaces have dark-wood furniture and hunting prints. Breast of duck with roasted Jerusalem artichokes and purple broccoli is typical of the Modern British fare; lunch is less formal. The inn is 2½ miles from Hawkshead.
