The Pheasant Review

Halfway between Cockermouth and Keswick at the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake, this traditional 18th-century coaching inn exudes English coziness without the usual Lakeland fussiness. Tasteful, modern bedrooms have soft but comfortable beds and tiled bathrooms with large tubs, and they overlook a garden and 60 acres of forest. The Fell Restaurant serves superb British fine dining in a refurbished space with contemporary touches: the fixed-price, three-course meals are £35. The Bistro offers a less formal, less expensive alternative.
