Fodor's Expert Review The Pheasant
Off A66, Bassenthwaite Lake, Cumbria, CA13 9YE, England Fodor's Choice
Halfway between Cockermouth and Keswick at the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake, this traditional 18th-century coaching inn exudes English coziness without the usual Lakeland fussiness. Tasteful, modern bedrooms have soft but comfortable beds and tiled bathrooms with large tubs, and they overlook a garden and 60 acres of forest. The Fell Restaurant serves superb British fine dining in a nicely refurbished space; the Bistro offers a less formal setting. The intimate old bar remains the star of the show, however, and is popular with locals as well as guests.
