Behind its dignified 16th- and 17th-century exterior, limestone Kelmscott Manor was, in its Victorian heyday, a site of social unrest as well as domestic disarray. Here, artist, writer, and socialist William Morris (1834-96) launched his anti-industrial Arts and Crafts movement. His wife, Jane, openly cohabited with her lover, the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82), Morris's business partner. Today the house displays textiles, furniture, and ceramics by Morris and his associates. Morris died at Kelmscott and is buried in the local churchyard.
