Britain's oldest public museum contains among its priceless collections (all university-owned) many Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts uncovered during archaeological expeditions conducted by the university. Michelangelo drawings and an extraordinary statuary collection are highlights, as is the Alfred Jewel. This ancient piece features a large semiprecious stone set in gold carved with the words Aelfred mec heht gewyrcan," which translates from old English as "Alfred ordered me to be made." The piece dates from the reign of King Alfred the Great (ruled 871-899).

This museum was undergoing renovation at the time of my visit, but they still had their "greatest hits" on display. Has an especially good Egyptian collection and porcelain holdings, a well as a few good paintings.
