If you've ever wondered what it would feel like to be an Edwardian grandee, splurge for a stay at this stately home, one of Britain's grandest hotels. Cliveden's opulent interior includes portraits such as Sargent's portrait of Nancy Astor (in the Great Hall), suits of armor, and a richly paneled staircase. The plush traditional bedrooms each bear the name of someone famous who has stayed here. Since people lease many of the rooms, you may feel you're in a home rather than a hotel. Waldo's (£££££), one of three restaurants, serves excellent contemporary British and French cuisine.

The place was very nearly just perfect. The hotel is obviously sublime. And obviously expensive. The room we had was exceptional, with incredible paintings sculpture and fireplace. The grounds are awesome. The staff just fabulous. My one only gripe. The food. Oh dear. Our evening meal in the main dining room was terrible. Just awful. Especially considering the price. The chef was useless. Stay in the hotel. It really is marvellous. But eat out. Or chop your tongue off.
