Sheldonian Theatre

Fodor's Review:

This fabulously ornate theater is where Oxford's impressive graduation ceremonies are held, conducted almost entirely in Latin. Dating to 1663, it was the first building designed by Sir Christopher Wren when he served as professor of astronomy. The D-shape theater has pillars, balconies, and an elaborately painted ceiling. Outside, stone pillars are topped by 18 massive stone heads, sculpted in the 1970s to replace originals destroyed by air pollution.

  • Cost: £1.50
  • Open: Mon.-Sat. 10-12:30 and 2-4:30; mid-Nov.-Feb., closes at 3:30. Closed for 10 days at Christmas and Easter and for degree ceremonies and events
