Henley Royal Regatta

Henley Royal Regatta

Henley Royal Regatta (01491/572153. www.hrr.co.uk), a series of rowing competitions that draw participants from many countries, takes place in late June and early July each year. Large tents go up, especially along both sides of the unique straight stretch of river here known as Henley Reach (1 mi, 550 yards), and every surrounding field becomes a parking lot. The most prestigious place for spectators is the Stewards' Enclosure, but admission here is by invitation only. Fortunately, there is plenty of space on the public towpath from which to watch the early stages of the races. If you want to attend, make your plans and book a room months in advance (500,000 attend the race, including members of the Royal Family). Each day, the racing pauses twice, at noon for luncheon and at 4 for tea.
