When to Go to Oxford

When to Go to Oxford

As with all of England, the depths of winter are not the ideal time to visit, as the winter chill can chase you indoors. High summer is lovely, but droves of visitors have the same effect on some travelers as bad weather. If crowds trouble you, but you relish a bit of sunshine, consider visiting in late spring or early fall, when the weather is not too bad, and the crowds have headed home for the school year. Book tickets and accommodations well in advance for Henley's Royal Regatta at the cusp of June and July or Ascot's Royal Meeting in mid-June. Visiting at Eton and the Oxford colleges is much more restricted during term time (generally September to late March and late April to mid-July). Most stately homes are open March through September or October only—call in advance if you're planning an itinerary. Avoid any driving in the London area during afternoon and morning rush hours.
