Fodor's Review

Business moguls and sophisticated foodies can be found sampling an aperitif in a comfy armchair before moving to the sleek, slate-floor dining room at Purnell's. This high spot in the business district, in a Victorian terra-cotta and redbrick building, is where chef Glyn Purnell creates his adventurous Modern British fare. In addition to a few à la carte options, you can choose from a couple of different, whole-table tasting menus—depending on how adventurous you're feeling. The "Now" menu doesn't stray far from traditional British tastes—roast brill, Herefordshire beef with black truffle, followed by comfort food desserts. "Reminisce" is much more playful; you could be presented with haddock and eggs served with cornflakes to start, followed by beef carpaccio with octopus in red wine. Prices at lunchtime are half what they are in the evening.
