Broughton Castle

Fodor's Review:

Once owned by the great chancellor and patron William of Wykeham (whose descendants live there still), this regal redbrick, moated mansion dates to 1300, and it was remodeled in Tudor times. The inside is rich with fireplaces, plasterwork, and exquisite furniture. High points include the Great Chamber, the chapel, and a fine collection of Chinese wallpaper. The house's opening hours are limited, as it is home to members of the Twistleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family, which, understandably, shortened its length family name to "Fiennes" in the 1960s. Broughton appeared in the movie Shakespeare in Love as the home of Viola de Lesseps—a nice touch given that actor Joseph Fiennes, who played Shakespeare in the film, is the owner's cousin.
