The Royal Shakespeare Company performs Shakespeare plays year-round in Stratford, as well as in other venues around Britain. Stratford's Royal Shakespeare Theatre is the home of the RSC, one of the finest repertory troupes in the world and long the backbone of the country's theatrical life. Although the company's main stage will close for three years beginning in spring 2007, performances will take place at a temporary space. In September and October, visiting companies perform opera, ballet, and musicals. The Swan Theatre, behind the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, stages plays by Shakespeare contemporaries such as Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson. In the Other Place, the RSC performs some of its most adventurous work. Prices usually are £7 to £45. Book ahead, as seats go fast, but day of performance (two per person to personal callers only) and returned tickets are often available.
