The Savoy Grill

The Savoy Grill Review

You can feel the history in the room at this glamorous 1889 Art Deco power dining salon, which has hosted all the greats from Oscar Wilde and Frank Sinatra to Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. Nowadays—buffed up with Swarovski chandeliers, velvet coverings, gold leaf-backed tortoiseshell walls, and period photos and mirrors—it caters for business barons and dreamy top-end tourists who come for the Grill's famous table-side trolley, which might trundle up with roasts like saddle of lamb, crown of pork, or traditional beef Wellington. Savoy dishes like omelette Arnold Bennett (with smoked haddock, Parmesan, and cream) or old-favorite egg cocotte with smoked bacon, wild mushrooms, and red wine sauce are to the fore, and there's impressive classics like T-bone, Chateaubriand, and Porterhouse steaks, plus oysters, Dover sole, and lobster Thermidor. All delights from a bygone age—as is this dining room, which is very heavy on the Art Deco style (so if you don't like that look....)
