London Restaurants

The Square

Updated 03/06/2014

Fodor's Review

Located off beautiful Berkeley Square, this restaurant is a long-standing haven for the titans of business who come for the showy wine list, the well-spaced linen-covered tables, and chef Philip Howard's sophisticated French haute cuisine. In season, you may find marvelously balanced wonders like Dorset crab lasagne with shellfish cappuccino, guinea fowl with truffles and Parmesan, or Lincolnshire hare with beetroot and creamed polenta. Impeccable desserts like Brillat-Savarin

cheesecake or fig soufflé with fig leaf ice cream are so good that you're sure to return time and again.

Needs some warmth

What a shame that the modern decor gives this restaurant a cold feeling. The food was delicious, the service satisfactory but the atmosphere is harsh. I hope the owners read this review & make some changes. It could really be so much more pleasant.

No Whines about The Wines

The sommelier produced all sorts of excellent wines-by-the-glass (none French) many that were not listed in the huge Winelist, that exactly matching our needs. And the meal was good value as well!

The Square Rocked, We Rolled (out of there, that is)

Dined at The Square on Nov. 3, 2000. An overall incredible dining experience (though quite pricey). Tasting Menu was extraordinary (grilled scallops, foie gras, turbot, mousse of grouse, venison, homemade sugar donut/yogurt, and souffle!! All Outstanding. Dined post-theater, restaurant had a good crowd up until midnight. One note: Dining map in Fodor's London 2001 depicts old location. Restaurant has moved north of The Ritz Hotel.
